SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Ryan Humphrey had 16 points and 12 rebounds and Notre Dame shot better than 40 percent for the first time in a Big East game this season, making 21 of 51 shots, to beat Seton Hall 60-51 Saturday.
The 51 points were the fewest ever given up by Notre Dame in a Big East game, surpassing the 52 points the Irish gave up in a 17-point victory over Syracuse in 1997.
The victory ended a three-game home losing streak for the Irish (13-6, 3-3 Big East) – their longest such losing streak in eight years – and also ended a three-game overall losing streak. Seton Hall (10-9, 3-4) hasn’t won back-to-back games since winning four straight in early December.
While the Irish shot 41.2 percent from the floor, including 50 percent in the second half, the Pirates shot only 29 percent, their second worst outing this season.
The Irish were without their second-leading rebounder Harold Swanagan for a second straight game and Irish coach Mike Brey shook up his lineup, starting Torian Jones in place of struggling David Graves. Graves started slowly with only one point in the first half, but finished with 11 points. Chris Thomas added 11.
John Allen was the only Pirate in double figures with 11 points. Leading scorer Andre Barrett had five points on 2-of-11 shooting and second-leading scorer Darius Lane had seven points on 2-of-12 shooting, hitting two 3-pointers in the final 5:32.
The Pirates, who led 23-22 at halftime, cut Notre Dame’s lead to 35-33 when Marcus Toney-El made a free throw with 11:37 to go. But Tom Timmermans converted on a three-point play and Matt Carroll hit a 3-pointer to start an 8-0 run as the Irish opened a 43-33 lead.
The Irish extended the lead to 54-39 after Carroll hit another 3-pointer and Jordan Cornette slam dunked a rebound off a Carroll miss with 3:13 left.
