SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) – Dan Langhi scored 27 points, including four free throws in overtime, to lead Vanderbilt to an 87-85 victory over Notre Dame on Saturday.
Langhi’s last two free throws came with 12 seconds play and gave the Commodores (4-0) their best start since 1986.
Sophomore David Graves scored a career-high 33 points for Notre Dame (3-4), which lost its second straight overtime game.
The Commodores used strong inside defense to hold Irish forward Troy Murphy to 17 points. It was the first this season Murphy was held to less than 20 points.
Murphy’s 3-pointer with 1:30 left in regulation brought Notre Dame within two points and his free throws with nine seconds left forced the overtime.
James Strong and Greg LaPointe each had 14 points for Vanderbilt. Matt Carroll added 18 for Notre Dame.
Notre Dame led by five points as Carroll scored eight points in the first 10 minutes of the game, but Atiba Prater’s 3-pointer gave Vanderbilt a 22-21 lead with 8:20 to go in the opening half.
The Commodores then built an eight-point lead with three minutes to go and led 42-34 at halftime as Langhi scored 19 points.
Vanderbilt extended its streak of making at least one 3-pointer to 416 games.
