BOSTON – The Notre Dame men’s and women’s cross country teams placed third and fifth respectively at the 26-team 1998 BIG EAST Cross Country Championships held at Franklin Park.
Junior JoAnna Deeter (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) finished as the top Irish runner with a third place in the 5K women’s race, while sophomore Ryan Shay (Central Lake, Mich.) finished as the top men’s runner for the Irish in sixth place. Freshman Luke Watson (Stillwater, Minn.) also made the 1998 All-BIG EAST team coming in right behind Shay in seventh with a time of 24:25 on the 8K course.
Sarah Dupre of Providence won the women’s race in the 125-runner field with a time of 16:51, while Providence’s Ben Noad won the men’s race with a course record time of 23:37. In the team competition, the 10th-ranked Villanova women captured first place by upsetting defending BIG EAST champion #4 Providence and seventh-ranked Georgetown. Providence won men’s race with 36 points to dethrone the Irish, who were the BIG EAST champions in 1997.
Both the Notre Dame men’s and women’s teams will be back in action on November 14 for the NCAA District IV races in Terra Haute, Ind..
