MADISON, Wis. – The Notre Dame men’s golf team kicked off the 2017-18 season on Sunday afternoon at the Badger Invitational on the University Ridge Golf Course (Par 72, Yardage 7,259). After shooting a 292 (+4) in the opening round, the Irish sit in a tie for sixth place.
Individually, Ben Albin’s round of 71 (-1) placed the junior in a tie for 10th, trailing the overall leader (Texas A&M’s Chander Phillips) by five strokes.
“We started off pretty slow, but maintained a positive attitude throughout the day,” Notre Dame head coach John Handrigan stated. “Because of that, we finished strong on the back-nine, which got us back into the tournament with a chance to make a move tomorrow.”
The Notre Dame five-some found themselves in an unwanted position at +10 heading into holes 12-15, but the Irish rallied down the final stretch to finish at +4. Albin led the charge with a spectacular -4 on the back-nine, highlighted by a birdie on 15th followed immediately with an eagle on the par-5 16th.
Both John Felitto (-1) and Miguel Delgado (-2) each followed Albin’s lead by shooting under-par on the back-nine. Felitto ultimately finished with an even-par (72) on the day which placed him in a tie for 19th, while Delgado’s 74 (+2) earned him a tie for 42nd.
Rounding out the team results were Davis Chatfield’s 75 (+3) and Davis Lamb’s 78 (+6).
In addition, Notre Dame had three student-athletes competing individually outside of the team score, with Kevin Conners leading that trio with a 74 (+2) today. Next, Hunter Ostrom notched a 75 (+3) while Alex Jamieson was right behind at 76 (+4).
Monday’s second round will once again commence at 10 a.m. ET with the following tee times announced for the Irish: Hunter Ostrom (10:08 a.m.), Kevin Conners (10:16 a.m.), Alex Jamieson (Noon), Davison Lamb (10:40 a.m.), Davis Chatfield (10:48 a.m.), Miguel Delgado (10:56 a.m.), John Felitto (11:04 a.m.) and Ben Albin (11:12 a.m.).
