Men's Swimming And Diving Ready For Shamrock Invitational

Jan. 22, 2009

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team returns to the Rolfs Aquatic Center this weekend to host the Shamrock Invitational. The Irish (3-6) welcome Denver, Michigan State and West Virginia to the event.

This will be the fourth time Notre Dame has hosted the Shamrock Invitational, a meet that spans two days and covers three sessions within a championship-style format. Action starts Friday (Jan. 23) at 6:00 p.m. (ET), resumes Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m., and concludes Saturday evening at 5:00 p.m. Notre Dame will honor its seniors – Bill Bauman, Michael Bulfin, Jace Hopper, Danny Lutkus, Daniel Rave, Mitchell Sherman, Jeff Wood and manager Mike Mashura – prior to Saturday evening’s session.

Notre Dame heads into the invite along the wake of junior John Lytle, who was recently named the BIG EAST Athlete of the Week for swimming and diving. Lytle had four individual wins over the course of two dual meets last weekend.

“This is an important competition for us,” Irish head coach Tim Welsh said. “It is our last major tune-up before the BIG EAST Championships. The field this year is excellent. West Virginia was the BIG EAST Conference champion two years ago. Michigan State is enjoying their best year in quite a while and Denver beat us in the Ohio State Invitational in December. So the field is very strong and that is exactly what we want. We would like to see where we are in our primary events. This is a weekend we certainly want to measure improvement.”

Live stats, results, scores and complete meet coverage will be available at UND.com.
