Irish compete in final home dual meet of the season this weekend:

The Notre Dame men’s swimming team (3-2) will compete in two meets within 24 hours this weekend when the Irish face Wisconsin-Milwaukee at home Friday, Jan. 26 (4:00 p.m.), then travel to Muncie, Ind., to take on Ball State at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27.

It will be the first meet action the Irish have faced since Jan. 6, when the team took time out from their holiday break training trip in Florida to compete in a Christmas Competition with Denison and Kansas. There was no team scoring in the event as each swimmer competed in the 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke, 100 breaststroke, 100 freestyle, 200 individual medley and the 50 freestyle.

This will be the 11th dual meet between the Irish and Wisconsin-Milwaukee with Notre Dame holding a 10-0 advantage in the series. Both teams competed against each other in 2000 at the Bill Ritter Invitational (Jan. 21-22) where an abbreviated Irish squad finished third. Junior Mike Koss (Aurora, Colo.) won the 100 breaststroke at the 2000 Ritter Invitational while senior Brian Skorney (Staten Island, NY) won the 100 backstroke.

When the Irish travel to Muncie, Ind., on Saturday, it will be the 18th meeting between Notre Dame and Ball State. The Cardinals own a 10-7 advantage in the series.

In the record books: Notre Dame swimmers and divers have achieved some of the best times and highest scores in school history this season. Junior David Horak (Dumfries, Va.) has been extremely fast, setting school records in the 100 (50.52) and 200 (1:49.90) backstroke this season. Horak has also been solid in the 100 butterfly, swimming 50.15, which is third-best in team history.

Senior Ryan Verlin (Rye, NY), who has been one of the top butterfly specialist in school history throughout his career, swam a 1:50.45 in the 200 butterfly this year. That time is ranked seventh on the all-time charts.

The Irish divers have been most impressive this season. Helping the Irish throughout the dual meet season, senior Herb Huesman (Cincinnati, Ohio), sophomore Andy Maggio (Cincinnati, Ohio) and sophomore Joe Miller (South Bend, Ind.) have been spectacular in posting some of the top diving scores in Irish history. Huesman’s 324.05 points on the one-meter board is the second-best score in the progam’s history. Huesman owns the top score of 335.60, set in 1998. Maggio posted an impressive score in the three-meter board this season with 452.70 points (11 dives) at the Notre Dame Invitational, while Miller’s 378.60 points at the Notre Dame Invite is one of his personal best performances.
