The Notre Dame men’s swimming team has been named a College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Academic All-Star Team for the winter/spring semester of 2000. To earn the award, all team members must average at least a 2.80 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
Notre Dame, the BIG EAST conference runner up for the second consecutive year, earned seventh place in the rankings by posting a 3.210 grade point average in the 2000 winter/spring time period. The CSCAA has also recognized three categories, “commendable”, “excellent” and “superior,” for teams in the rankings. Irish head coach Tim Welsh’s team earned “excellent” honors for their work in the classroom.
The CSCAA also ranked 156 Academic All-Stars and senior Ray Fitzpatrick (Doylestown, Pa.), a nine-time all-BIG EAST selection, was 15th on the list for swimmers and divers. A seven-time Dean’s List member, Fitzpatrick boasts a 3.720 grade point average and has received numerous academic and school-related awards including the Knute-Rockne Student-Athlete award and is one of a selected group of student-athletes in the University’s Academic Honors Program. He also became the first Notre Dame swimmer to earn national recognition as a GTE Fall/Winter At-Large Academic All-American.
