MIAMI, Fla. — The 29th-ranked Notre Dame men’s tennis team won the doubles point and won four singles matches to beat 10th-seeded Georgetown 5-0 on Friday in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Men’s Tennis Championships at the Neil Schiff Tennis Complex in Miami, Fla. With their quarterfinal win, the second-seeded and defending champion Irish advance to Saturday’s semifinals to face third-seeded St. John’s and improve to 11-9 on the season.
Seniors Trent Miller and Ryan Sachire claimed the first doubles match for the Irish with an 8-1 win over Marc Lohser and Troy Crichlow at No. 2 doubles. The 30th-ranked team of sophomores Javier Taborga and Aaron Talarico won 8-2 over Beau Brewer and Nick Sklavounos to clinch the point for Notre Dame. Sophomores James Malhame and Casey Smith led 7-2 at No. 3 doubles when the doubles was abandoned with the point determined.
After not completing their doubles match, Malhame and Smith won in straight sets to give the Irish a 3-0 lead. Smith defeated Sklavounos 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, while Malhame defeated Ken Jordan 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 singles. Tenth-ranked All-American Sachire clinched the win with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Brewer at No. 1 singles. Sophomore Andrew Laflin completed his match just seconds after Sachire with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Dave Boyer at No. 5 singles. Junior Matt Daly and Talarico led singles matches at Nos. 2 and 4 singles when play was abandoned with the outcome of the match determined.
