CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The 13th-ranked Notre Dame men’s tennis team saw its season end with a 4-1 loss to 18th-ranked Washington on Sunday in the NCAA second round at Harvard. The Huskies won the doubles point and then used three singles wins in straight sets to advance to the NCAA round of 16. Irish freshman Luis Haddock-Morales won Notre Dame’s only point. The Irish, who beat host Harvard 4-0 on Saturday in the first round, finish the year with a 17-7 record.
Washington won at Nos. 1 and 3 doubles to win the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead heading into singles. Jeremy Berman and Andy Posavac defeated Notre Dame’s No. 1 team of juniors Javier Taborga and Aaron Talarico 8-6. Taborga and Talarico will compete in the NCAA doubles tournament, beginning May 23, in Athens, Ga.
Haddock-Morales beat Berman 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 singles for the Irish victory. The Huskies used wins at Nos. 1, 4 and 5 singles for the 4-1 victory. Washington advances to the round of 16 for the first time and next meets second-seeded UCLA. The NCAA second-round loss marks the second straight for Notre Dame, a 4-2 loser in the 2000 second round to second-seeded UCLA.
