NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Men’s tennis head coach Bobby Bayliss announced that Blas Moros of Florida and Michael Moore of Illinois have each signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the University of Notre Dame and continue their tennis careers at the collegiate level, beginning in the fall of 2009.
“We couldn’t be more excited to have Michael and Blas joining us next year,” said Bayliss. “Throughout their high school careers, both of these young men have excelled in the classroom and on the tennis court, and we are thrilled to bring student-athletes of their talent level into our program.”
Moros, a resident of Boca Raton, Florida, is currently ranked 19th in the nation by tennisrecruiting.net, the nation’s most comprehensive source for information about tennis recruiting. Moros attends Pine Crest High School and has an overall juniors record of 36-12 in 2008, including a 14-6 mark versus five-star recruits. He also has a 4-5 mark against fellow blue-chip recruits, and is ranked third in the state of Florida. In the summer of 2008, Moros finished third at the Florida State Junior Closed Championships in Daytona Beach.
“Truly one of the best players in his class, Blas will bring a very high level of energy, talent and athleticism into our program next year,” said Bayliss. “He can run like a deer and his serve and forehand are his two dominating shots that he likes to control points with. Blas has an extremely solid foundation from which to build, and we are anxious to see how far he can take his game during his time at Notre Dame and beyond.”
Moore is a senior at Glenbrook High School and a resident of Glenview, Illinois. He is currently ranked 54th nationally by tennisrecruiting.net, as well as third in Illinois and sixth in the Great Lakes region. He carries a 2008 overall juniors record of 61-21, including a 12-9 mark against fellow five-star recruits. Moore won the 2008 Boys 18 singles title at the Midwest Open Championships in July of 2008, defeating Gregory Andrews in the finals, 6-1, 6-3.
“Michael, quite possibly, had the quickest rise into the nation’s elite of any American player this past summer. He compiled a record of 35-4 in the months of June and July and truly developed into one of the best prospects in the country,” added associate head coach Ryan Sachire. “At 6’4” Michael has the frame to play a dominating style of tennis with a huge serve and overpowering groundstrokes. We are excited for Michael to continue his development here at Notre Dame and to see how good of a player he can become.”
The 2008-09 men’s tennis team will open their dual-match season on January 16 as the Irish play host to Pepperdine at 4:00 p.m. The match will take place at the Eck Tennis Pavilion in Notre Dame, Ind.
