IRISH END HOME STAND WITH ACC/BIG TEN CHALLENGE VISIT FROM ILLINOIS
The University of Notre Dame men’s basketball team (5-1) caps its season-opening seven-game home stand with Illinois (2-4) in the 2018 ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The game is an event rematch from 2015, when the Irish defeated the Illini 84-79 in the dedication game of Illinois’ State Farm Center.
ILLINOIS QUICK FACTS
- Located in Champaign, Illinois, Illinois is a member of the Big Ten Conference.
- Head coach Brad Underwood is in his second year with the Fighting Illini. Underwood was the head coach at Stephen F. Austin in 2016 when the Irish defeated the Lumberjacks on a last-second tip-in basket from current senior Rex Pflueger to advance to the Sweet 16.
- Illinois finished 14-18 and 4-14 in the Big Ten last season and is coming off a trip to Maui Invitational last week.
NOTRE DAME vs. ILLINOIS
- The Irish and Illini will be meeting for the 42nd time and the second time in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
- The most recent meeting, also part of the ‘Challenge,’ took place in the dedication game of the State Farm Center on December 2, 2015 – an 84-79 Notre Dame victory.
- Tuesday evening marks Illinois’ first visit to Purcell Pavilion. While the teams have met 41 times, including eight games at Notre Dame, all those previous meetings took place in the Fieldhouse. Illinois will be making its first trip to Notre Dame for a men’s basketball game since December 13, 1855 (a 103-93 Illini victory).
- Before the 2015 victory at Illinois, the Irish and Illini last met in the 2003 NCAA Championship second round in Indianapolis, Indiana, where fifth-seeded Notre Dame defeated fourth-seeded Illinois 68-60 to advance to the NCAA Sweet 16.
- Notre Dame and Illinois met every season from 1957 through 1973 (1964 the lone season without a game) with 18 of those 19 games held at Chicago Stadium (the 1960 game was held at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis). The Illini won 13 of those 18 matchups in Chicago Stadium.
- The Irish are 2-0 against Illinois under head coach Mike Brey.
- Notre Dame is 275-235-1 against teams from the Big Ten.
ACC/BIG TEN CHALLENGE HISTORY
Notre Dame is in its sixth season as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference and will be taking part in its sixth ACC/Big Ten Challenge game against Illinois. The Irish are 3-2 all-time in the event and after Tuesday will cap three home-and-home series in the event with Iowa, Michigan State and Illinois.
