NEW LONDON, N.C. – The Notre Dame men’s golf team battled challenging morning conditions to card an 11-over par 299 in the first round of the 2016 ACC Men’s Golf Championship on Friday (April 22) at the Old North State Country Club (Par-72; 7,102 Yards).
Notre Dame, along with playing partners Boston College and Virginia Tech, teed off first and had to compete in heavy rains throughout the majority of the first round.
The Irish trio of freshman Ben Albin, junior Matthew Rushton and junior Blake Barens each carded one-over par 73’s to lead the Irish.
Albin’s ACC Championship debut included five birdies and he played the final two holes at two-under par.
Rushton opened his day with birdies on two of the first three holes and added 13 pars and three bogeys for the second best ACC-championship round of his career (out of seven).
Barens, whose 73 marked his best career ACC Championship round (out of four), had three birdies to go along with four bogeys and 11 pars. He played the final seven holes at a two-under par clip.
Junior Liam Cox shot an eight-over par 80 to also score for the Irish, while Miguel Delgado shot an 84.
Clemson finished the first round in first place (-15), followed by Wake Forest (-11). After those two teams, just 12 strokes separate the eight teams in third through 10th-place.
On the individual leader board, Wake Forest’s Paul McBride shot a six-under par 66 to take a one stroke lead over Clemson teammates Bryson Nimmer and Stephen Behr.
Notre Dame’s third appearance in the ACC Championship continues tomorrow, April 22, at 8:30 a.m. Live scoring will be available through www.theacc.com. Beginning at 3:00 p.m., ESPN3 will have live coverage of the second round, with Mac McDonald (play-by-play) and Brandon Turner (color analyst) serving as the announcing team.
