WATERVILLE, Ireland — The Notre Dame men’s golf team shot a 38-over par 326 in the final round of the Jerry Murray/Waterville Invitational on Saturday at the Waterville Golf Links to finish fifth in the thee-day tournament.
The six-team tournament, which was hosted by Notre Dame and the Waterville Golf Links, included three Irish Universities and three NCAA programs. Saturday was another day of tough scoring conditions and the tournament’s top-five teams carded team rounds within four strokes of each other.
Maynooth University finished first (289-291-324=904, +40), followed by Texas A&M (298-294-324=916, +52), UNC Wilmington (296-309-327=932, +68), Ulster University (300-309-325, +70), Notre Dame (304-310-326=940, +76) and the University College Dublin (309-315-338=962, +98).
Maynooth’s James Sugrue finished first on the individual leaderboard after shooting a final round 73 (74-72-73=219) to best teammate Eugene Smith (72-80-72=224) by five strokes. The top collegiate finisher was Connor Black (78-78-72=228) of Texas A&M, who placed third.
Notre Dame freshman Miguel Delgado carded a final round 76 to move up to fifth on the final leaderboard (75-79-76=230). He was the third-best finisher amongst the NCAA participants.
Junior Matthew Rushton placed 18th after shooting a final round 78 to finish at 19-over par (77-80-78=235).
Junior Blake Barens shot a final round 79 to place 22nd at 22-over par (77-82-79=238).
Freshman Ben Albin placed 29th after shooting a final round 80 to finish at 24-over par (75-85-80=240).
Freshman Kevin Conners shot a final round 77 to finish 36th at 33-over par (86-86-77=249).
Playing as individuals, Thomas Steve finished 26th (75-83-81=239, +23), Liam Cox placed 28th (76-84-80=240), Zach Toste finished 33rd (79-85-79=243, +27) and Jens Verhey placed 37th (83-81-87=251, +35).
The Irish are now off until second semester when they return to play at the Yestingsmeier Match Play on Feb. 8-9 at the Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Dade City, Fla.
