NOTRE DAME, Ind. – In a strong 14-team Fighting Irish Classic field, which features two programs in the top-10, the No. 17 Notre Dame men’s golf team sits atop the leaderboard heading to Tuesday’s final round. After 36 holes on Monday, the Irish are 14-under par and seven strokes ahead of North Carolina (-7) in second place.
The Irish were once eight strokes behind the Tar Heels halfway through the opening round and were just one-under par heading into round two. That’s when the Irish caught fire, primarily behind a surging Davis Chatfield, carding a 271 (-13) in the second round. The 13-under par marked a program best in the Fighting Irish Classic.
If the Irish remain atop the leaderboard on Tuesday it would mark their fourth Fighting Irish Classic crown. In addition, it would mark their third tournament win in four tournaments this season, a feat that hasn’t been accomplished in program history (three overall would tie the 1999-00 squad for most in an academic year).
INDIVIDUAL LEADERBOARD
Palmer Jackson begins Tuesday in second place with a 135 (-7), just four strokes back from Christopher Gotterup of Rutgers. Jackson ended round one in first place after carding a 66 (-5), then slipped into second with a 69 (-2) in the afternoon.
After an opening round 73 (+2), Davis Chatfield caught on absolute fire, notching a career low round of 64 (-7). The seven-under par round tied his teammate John Felitto for the lowest round ever shot by a Notre Dame golfer in the history of the tournament.
Next, Davis Lamb marked the third Irish golfer in the top-10, tied for eighth with a 140 (-2). Lamb shot an even-par 71 in round one before jumping 13 spots in the standings with a second round 69 (-2).
Andrew O’Leary carded rounds of 73-72 for a 145 total (+3), tying the sophomore for 30th place. Furthermore, Hunter Ostrom rebounded quite nicely after an opening round 79 (+8), carding a second round 69 (-2), which included an eagle on the par-five 10th. Ostrom is tied for 46th with a 148 (+6).

The Irish are looking to take the title against No. 3 Arizona State, Boston College, No. 41 Georgia Southern, Iowa, Iowa State, No. 49 Kent State, Michigan, Michigan State, Mississippi State, No. 10 North Carolina, Rutgers, Toledo and Missouri-Kansas City.
