LAREDO, Texas — Three different University of Notre Dame golfers fired rounds under par and the Irish improved on their day-one total by 13 shots Saturday en route to a 10th-place finish (three-over par) at the University of Houston 2016 Border Olympics at the Laredo Country Club.
Freshman Ben Albin, junior Blake Barens and junior Matt Rushton shot three-under (69), two-under (70) and one-under (71), respectively. Albin and Rushton finished the two-day tournament in a tie for 14th place at three-under par (141). Barens shot an even-par, two-round total of 144 – good for a tie for 29th.
Freshman Miguel Delgado rebounded from a disappointing opening round 80 (eight-over par) with a one-over par round of 73. Degaldo tied for 89th. Freshman Kevin Conners also performed far better in the second round. Conners, who shot a 79 on day one, fired a three-over par round of 75 on Saturday. He tied for 92nd.
Junior Liam Cox bettered his first-round score of 84 by four shots with a round of 80.
No. 26 Baylor ran away with the team championship. The Bears finished at 20-under par – eight strokes clear of second-place No. 37 Houston (12-under par). Rice (nine-under), Sam Houston State (seven-under) and Louisiana (seven-under) rounded out the top five.
Notre Dame returns to action on Apr. 1-3 at the Clemson Invitational at The Cliffs at Keowee Falls in Salem, South Carolina.
