Men’s Tennis Opens Season With Two Sweeps of IUPUI

The Notre Dame Men’s Tennis team kicked off the 2024 spring dual campaign with a pair of matches at home on Saturday. The Irish played back to back matches against IUPUI with the first serve of the season taking place at noon.

The noon match started with freshman Chase Thompson and sophomore Evan Lee didn’t drop a game in their first match together at #2 doubles. They took the set 6-0 and setup the top pair of sophomore Sebastian Dominko and senior Jean-Marc Malkowski to clinch the doubles point with a 6-2 win and garner the early 1-0 lead overall.

In singles, Thompson was first off the court again at the #3 position with a 6-1, 6-2 followed shortly after by Dominko with an identical score at #1 singles. Malkowski clinched the first dual match win of the year, securing the fourth point on the day at #4 by a 6-2, 6-2 score. The remaining matches would continue to roll in favor of the Irish as graduate student Nil Giraldez won his first dual match in an Irish uniform at #2 singles 6-2, 6-1. Juniors Jamie Corsillo and Yu Zhang won at #5 and #6 respectively. Corsillo won 6-2, 6-0 and Zhang 6-3, 6-2 to round out the 7-0 sweep of the Jaguars.

The second match of the day started with eerily similar fashion as Thompson and Lee took the #2 doubles position 6-0 again to not drop a game in doubles on the day. One point later, the #1 doubles team of Dominko and Malkowski won 6-0 as well to clinch the doubles point.

Thompson would again set the tone in singles, this time at the top position in the lineup, and race off the court first with a 6-2, 6-0 win. Zhang, playing in the #3 singles spot, was next to finish with a 6-2, 6-2 win to put the Irish within a match of the win. Corsillo, playing #2 in this second act, clinched the match winning the last 8 games of the game to claim a 6-4, 6-0 win and seal the 4-0 win.
