TULSA, Okla. – University of Notre Dame men’s tennis standout Quentin Monaghan has advanced through the qualifying round to earn a spot in the main draw at the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men’s All-American Championships, as he bested Georgia’s Nick Wood (No. 89), 6-3, 6-4, Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, Monaghan improves to 3-0 at the tournament and advances to the round of 64, which gets underway at 10 a.m. Thursday morning. The Chatham, New Jersey native will face off with USC’s Roberto Quirez (No. 33).
“Today was another great day for Quentin,” said head coach Ryan Sachire. “He is really playing well and competing at such a high level every point. If he continues to keep that same focus, he will have an opportunity to do well each match he plays. It’s awesome to see a kid, who cares so much about his craft, playing at the level that Q is playing at right now.”
Monaghan’s win marked the second of the tournament for the Irish as sophomore Josh Hagar defeated Wake Forest’s Maksim Kan (No. 69) in qualifying action earlier in the week.
In doubles, Notre Dame’s Billy Pecor and Alex Lawson open the main draw with Texas A&M’s AJ Catanzariti and Max Lunkin at 4 p.m. ET Thursday. The Irish duo, ranked No. 27 in the ITA rankings, will look to take down a hot doubles tandem that advanced through the qualifying round to make it to the main draw.
