NOTRE DAME, Ind. – John Mooney turned in a monstrous performance with 28 points and 16 rebounds to help the Notre Dame Fighting Irish beat the Marshall Thundering Herd 74-64 inside Purcell Pavilion on Friday evening.
The victory moved Notre Dame’s overall record to 3-1, including a 3-0 mark at home.
Joining Mooney in double-figure scoring on the evening was senior T.J. Gibbs (15 points) and sophomore Dane Goodwin (11 points).
HOW IT HAPPENED
With the score tied at 4-4 early, Notre Dame went on a 9-0 run with 17:59 left in the first half, culminating in a three from Gibbs, to take a 13-4 lead. The Fighting Irish then added two points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 40-29 advantage. Notre Dame capitalized on 10 Marshall turnovers in the period, turning them into 10 points on the other end of the floor.
Notre Dame kept its lead intact before going on a 5-0 run, finished off by Mooney’s three, to grow the lead to 45-32 with 18:39 to go in the contest. The Thundering Herd narrowed the margin somewhat before the game was over, but the Fighting Irish still cruised the rest of the way for the 74-64 win. Notre Dame got a boost from its bench in the period, as non-starters accounted for 10 of its 34 total points.

Mooney scored a career-high 28 points and pulled down a game-high 16 boards to complete his third double-double in just four games this season. Mooney rounded out his game with two assists and two steals to put an exclamation mark on his stellar performance.

Notre Dame forced 17 Marshall turnovers while committing just eight themselves in Friday’s game. The Fighting Irish turned those takeaways into 14 points on the offensive end of the floor. Gibbs led the way individually with three steals.
