NEW LONDON, N.C. – The University of Notre Dame men’s golf team utilized a total of three under-par rounds from team members during the second round of the ACC Championship, carding a cumulative score of one-under 287 on Saturday at the Old North State Club. After 36 holes of play, the Irish are in solo fifth place at 581 (294-287).
Freshman Matt Rushton made five birdies during the second round of his conference championship debut, posting a two-under-par 70 to lead all Irish players on day two. Rushton kick started his round with birdies at the par 5 first and par 3 third holes to move to minus two out of the gate. A pair of bogies bookended a birdie at the par 4 eighth hole as part of an outward one-under score of 35 for Rushton.
Rushton added a pair of birdies on the back nine to post an inward total of 35, and tie for 25th place at 146 (76-70, +2).
Junior Patrick Grahek turned in a bogey-free back nine score of 34 (-2) as part of a one-under 71, tying Rushton for 25th place at two-over, 146 (75-71). Grahek rolled in a combined four birdies during his round, playing the par 5s at Old North State Club in a cumulative one-under-par.
Senior tri-captain Andrew Lane tied for 35th place in the tournament field following rounds of 71-78 (149, +5), while sophomore Cory Sciupider birdied three of his final seven holes to shoot a second round 74 and tie for 44th place (76-74-150).
Senior tri-captain Niall Platt posted a second straight round of even par 72, earning a share of 13th place at 144, tops of the Notre Dame lineup. Platt took advantage of his opportunities on par 5s, notching birdies at the 536-yard first and 558-yard 11th holes on Saturday.
Platt was nine strokes off the pace set by Georgia Tech’s Ollie Schniederjans (65-70-135, -9). Clancy Waugh from Wake Forest held second place with a two-day score of 138 (71-67), with Florida State’s Hank Lebioda in third place at 139 (68-71). Clemson’s Cody Proveaux (71-70) and Virginia Tech’s Scott Vincent (73-68) are tied for fourth place at three-under 141.
No. 5 Georgia Tech carded the lowest round of the tournament, posting a 10-under-par 278 to take a two-stroke lead at 566 (288-278). No. 19 Florida State shot its second straight round of 284 for solo runner-up honors (568), followed by No. 32 Clemson in third place at 570 (289-281). No. 45 Wake Forest (290-283-573) was immediately in front of Notre Dame in fourth place at three-under-par.
The third and final round of the 2014 ACC Championship is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. (ET) on Sunday at the Old North State Club. Notre Dame’s wave of player tee times will begin at approximately 10:30.
