NOTRE DAME, Ind. – University of Notre Dame freshman Troy Murphy (Morristown, N.J.) was named the BIG EAST Conference rookie of the week for the third time this season and second week in a row for his performance in the Notre Dame’s 82-77 win over Eastern Kentucky on Saturday.
Murphy scored 27 points with 14 rebounds against Eastern Kentucky as the freshman recorded his fourth double-double of the season. Murphy leads the Irish in scoring at 19.5 points per game and 9.3 rebounds.
Murphy is the first Irish player to score in double figures in his first 10 career games since freshman became eligible to play in 1970-71. He was picked as the BIG EAST preseason newcomer of the year by Basketball News and BIG EAST Briefs.
