The University of Notre Dame women’s track and field team is grouped together with four teams at the top of the 2001 BIG EAST Indoor Track and Field Championship leaderboard. The meet is being held in Syracuse, NY, at the Carrier Dome. Notre Dame is in fourth place after the first day of competition with 24.5 points, right behind Georgetown with 25 points. Connecticut currently leads the meet with 33 points, followed closely by West Virginia with 32.5.
Liz Grow (New Braunfels, Texas), who entered the championship with the best 400-meter time in the league, qualified for the finals of the event with the best preliminary time (54.96). Grow is pursuing her second consecutive 400-meter BIG EAST indoor title.
Freshman Kristen Dodd (Toledo, Ohio) continued her rookie year improvement in the 60 meters, moving on to the finals after running a 7.70. Classmate Megan Johnson (Seattle, Wa.) also will compete in her first BIG EAST championship final race, placing sixth in the preliminaries of the mile run in 5:03.58.
Sophomore Tameisha King (Mableton, Ga.) moved to the finals of the 60-meter hurdles, posting the second-best time in the preliminaries (8.62). She also finished third in the long jump finals with a leap of 19-11.
School record-holder Jaime Volkmer (Kearney, Neb.) finishes as the league runner-up in the finals of the pole vault, clearing 12-1 ?.
