Notre Dame, Ind. – The Notre Dame women’s track and field team placed first with 170.5 points Saturday at the Spring Opener at Moose Krause Stadium on the campus of the University of Notre Dame. Miami (Ohio) was second with 129 points, followed by Western Michigan with 90.50 points.
On a day where winds were gusting in excess of 30 miles per hour, Notre Dame won 15 events, highlighted by the women’s 4×100 relay team provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships with a time of 44.74. Notre Dame was first in the event, followed by Western Michigan (48.81) and Miami (48.95).
Irish junior Dore DeBartolo and sophomore Tameisha King had good days, both winning two events. DeBartolo took the weight throw with a toss of 55.52 (182-0), just missing an NCAA provisional qualifying mark. She also won the shot put at 14.17 meters (46-6) and was second in the javelin at 34.86 meters (114-4) and the discus at 42.70 meters (140-01).
King was first in the long jump at 6.12 meters. She also won the 100 hurdles in 14.31, just ahead of Miami’s Erin Connolly, who finished in 14.89.
Notre Dame freshman Kristen Dodd made quite an impression in her first outdoor meet in South Bend, winning the 100- and 200-meter races. Dodd won the 200 in 25.07 and the 100 in 12.72.
Other winners on the women’s side for Notre Dame were senior Carri Lenz in the 400 meter hurdles (62.04), sophomore Andre Duplechain in the javelin (36.84), sophomore Jennifer Handley in the 1,500 (4:42.92), freshman Jennifer Kearney in the high jump (1.70), sophomore Jaime Volkmer in the pole vault (11.00), sophomore Kymia Love in the 400 meters (55.25), freshman Megan Johnson in the 800 meters (2:12.35) and the 4×400 relay team (3:55.81).
The Notre Dame women are next in action next Friday and Saturday (April 13-14) at the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn.
