Game two started at 9:43 p.m. EST after a 2:24 rain storm delayed the start of the game one (Notre Dame vs. UW-Milwaukee).
?UCSB drops to 3-11 in NCAA tournament play. The loss was the Gauchos’ ninth straight in NCAA regional play. The Gauchos have not won a regional game since beating Loyola Marymount in 1986.
Shortstop Jeff Bannon had his 18th multi-hit game of the season for the Gauchos.
Against FIU tonight, the Gauchos surrendered the most runs (11) since April 13th when they gave up 18 to Cal. State-Northridge.
UC Santa Barbara DH Jed Stringham’s fourth-inning double was his 10th of the season, making him the seventh Gaucho this season to reach double digits in two baggers.
Gaucho 1B Tyler Von Schell notched his 24th multi-hit game of the year before being ejected in the top of the 6th inning after disputing a balk decision.
The three balks by UCSB’s James Garcia were the most by a Gaucho pitcher this season. The Gauchos had four as a team, also a season high.
James Garcia’s 4.1 innings pitched was his shortest stint of the season. The nine runs and seven earned runs given up were also season highs.
James Garcia’s loss was his second straight after winning a school-record nine consecutive decisions.
Jim Bullard’s relief appearance was just his second of the season and first since Feb. 14 at UCLA.
With his two hits, UCSB 2B Chad Peshke recorded his 27th multi-hit game of the 2001 season.
UCSB’s Andy Campanella extended his hitting streak to 34-games with a single up the middle in the bottom of the ninth inning…a school record.
FIU’s three double plays this game ties a season high for double plays in a single contest.
A six-run inning represents FIU’s best effort since they scored ten runs against South Alabama on March 10th.
This win gives FIU a record of 2-3 in first-round games. The Golden Panthers’ last win was in 1999 when they defeated Florida Atlantic University.
FIU starting pitcher William Collazo broke a school record for consecutive wins with his 12th straight victory and his third complete game of the season.
FIU’s 17 runs marks their highest postseason run total in school history.
