Despite light rain and threatening skies on Saturday, game three started on time at 12 noon, less than 12 hours after the conclusion of Friday night’s game two. After a 2:24 rain delay postponed the start of the tournament on Friday, game two started at 9:43 p.m. EST and concluded at 12:47 a.m.
The game was played in a steady rain until the bottom of the fifth when play was suspended for the day after a 3:12 rain delay. The Florida International/Notre Dame winner’s bracket game, along with Game 5, was also washed out on Saturday.
The UC Santa Barbara/Wisconsin-Milwaukee game was resumed on Sunday at 10:35 a.m., with UC Santa Barbara leading 12-7.
The game was delayed again on Sunday at 11:19 a.m. with UC Santa Barbara leading 12-11 in the top of the eighth inning. Play resumed at 11:57 a.m. (38 minute rain delay). The official end time on Sunday was 12:36 p.m..
Wisconsin-Milwaukee Notes:
UWM pitcher Mike Olier’s 1+ innings on Saturday was his shortest start of the season. It was also the most runs allowed by the Panthers in the first inning this season.
Panther senior SS Matt Houk has reached base in 27 straight games.
UWM six errors, including four by 2B Scott Gillitzer, against UC Santa Barbara is a season-high for the Panthers. Ironically, UW-Milwaukee had not lost a game where it has committed five or more errors until today’s game.
The Panthers’ Scott Gillitzer recorded his 33rd multi-hit game of the season. He is also hitting a lofty .786 in his career at Frank Eck Stadium.
Scott Gillitzer’s four-hit game is the second of the season for him. He also has a five-hit game this year.
Eric Goerdt’s home run in the fourth inning stopped an 0-for-13 streak.
D.J. Daggett’s two triples tied an NCAA regional record for triples in a game.
Jed Stringham’s ninth inning homerun was only the second homer given up by Matt Freisleben in 2001.
Today’s outing by Matt Freileben was his longest outing of the season (3.2 innings).
UC Santa Barbara Notes:
Today’s win by the Gauchos was their first victory in regional play since 1986. Before today, UCSB had lost nine consecutive games in NCAA Regional action with its last win coming against Loyola Marymount.
This is UCSB head coach Bob Brontsema’s first 40-win season at the school, and the school’s first 40-win season since 1986
Jed Stringham’s home run in the ninth inning was his 14th of the season, the fourth most by a Gaucho in a season. It was also the first ninth-inning home of the year for the Gauchos.
Sophomore OF Ryan Spilborghs extended his hitting streak to 35 straight games with a single in the ninth inning (a UC Santa Barbara record). It was the second consecutive game where Spilborghs extended his hitting streak in his final at-bat.
With their two hits, both Dave Molidor and Skip Schumaker now have 31 multi-hit games this season…most in the Big West Conference.
Chad Peshke had a three-hit game today, his 28th multi-hit game of the season.
Closer Jamie Gonzalez has now pitched 15.1 consecutive scoreless inning and gone 19.1 innings without allowing an earned run …a span of 17 games.
Donovan Warrecker’s double in the ninth inning gave him 10 two-baggers this season, becoming the eighth different Gaucho to reach double digits in doubles in 2001.
