Notre Dame, Ind. – University of Notre hockey coach Dave Poulin today announced the 2002-03 Notre Dame hockey schedule. The 37-game schedule includes the 36-game regular season slate along with a preseason game with the University of Toronto opening the campaign on Friday, Oct. 4.
The Irish will play host to 17 regular season home games and play 19 road contests. Included in the 36-game schedule are 28-regular season CCHA games and eight non-league games.
The non-league schedule includes games versus teams from the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA), Hockey East, the ECAC and College Hockey America (CHA). Notre Dame opens the season with a pair of games at Minnesota-Duluth (Oct. 11-12). The Irish then host a single home game with Boston College (Nov. 1) before facing Wayne State at Joe Louis Arena on Dec. 13. They travel to Dartmouth’s Ledyard National Bank Tournament (Dec. 28-29) to face the Big Green in the 7:00 p.m. game on Dec. 28. The Irish will then face either Vermont or UMass-Lowell in the tournament’s second round. Notre Dame then closes out the non-league schedule on Jan. 17-18 with a pair of home games with Yale.
For the CCHA schedule, the Irish will be paired with Bowling Green, Ferris State and Western Michigan in the league’s new cluster format. They will face each of those teams four times with two games at home and two games on the road. Notre Dame will face the remaining eight CCHA teams just twice with Miami, Michigan State, Ohio State and Lake Superior State visiting the Joyce Center while the Irish travel to Michigan, Alaska Fairbanks, Nebraska-Omaha and Northern Michigan.
The CCHA playoffs will open the weekend of March 14-16 with a best-of-three round at campus sites. The league’s Super Six will then advance to Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Mich., March 21-23. Two games will be played on March 21 with the semifinals set for March 22 and the championship game on Sunday, March 23.
This season, the NCAA tournament will expand to 16 teams with four quarterfinal regionals set for Fri.-Sat., March 28-29 or Sat.-Sun., March 29-30. The Northeast Regional in Worcester, Mass. and the West Regional in Minneapolis, Minn. will be played on Mar. 28-29 while the East Regional in Providence, R.I. and the Midwest Regional in Ann Arbor, Mich. will be played Mar. 29-30.
The NCAA Frozen Four will be held in Buffalo, N.Y. at the HSBC Arena. The semifinals will be played on Thurs., April 10 with the championship game on Sat., April 12.
