NOTRE DAME, Ind. – Freshman Kristy Frilling has been named the BIG EAST Women’s Tennis Player of the Week, the league office announced Wednesday.
Frilling has made a definite impact for the Irish since her arrival on campus last fall.
The Sidney, Ohio native has recorded a 10-1 singles record and 16-1 doubles record since the fall tournament season began in September.
Frilling has a 2-0 singles record over the first three dual matches this season. The No. 39-ranked Frilling defeated Ohio State’s Paloma Escobedo, 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6), to open the season, then downed Pepperdine’s Alexandria Walters, 6-1, 6-0. She took No. 66 Anouk Tigu, of Arkansas, to three sets before the match was called when Notre Dame clinched their fourth point in the 4-1 Irish win.
In doubles action, Frilling and senior Kelcy Tefft are ranked No. 1 nationally and have a 3-0 record through three matches.
The duo defeated Ohio State’s Cami Hubbs and Christina Keesey, 8-3, before taking down Pepperdine’s Jillian Braverman and Anne-Christine Voicu, 8-2. Tefft and Frilling knocked off Arkansas’ eighth-ranked team of Nanar Airapetian and Anouk Tigu, 8-1, in Notre Dame’s 4-1 win over the Razorbacks.
Frilling and the Irish will host Michigan Friday at 4 p.m. in their first home match of the 2009 season.
