SUEZ, Egypt – The United States Under-20 Men’s National Team was eliminated from the U-20 World Cup following Saturday’s final matches of group play. Notre Dame’s Aaron Maund (Dorchester, Mass./The Roxbury Latin School) and Dillon Powers (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior) were members of the U.S. squad. The U.S. finished the tournament with a 1-2 record.
The U.S. finished the tournament in 17th place (out of 24 teams) and one slot shy of the Round of 16. The U.S. suffered a 3-0 loss to Korea Republic on Friday, Oct. 2 in its final group match.
The top two teams from each of the six four-team groups along with the top four remaining squads advanced to The Round of 16, which will take place Oct. 5-7. The quarterfinals are set for Oct. 9-10, with the semifinals to follow on Oct. 13. The championship match and third-place game are scheduled for Oct. 16.

Powers and Maund did not enter the match against Korea. Powers, a freshman midfielder, started the first contest of group competition, a 3-0 loss to Germany on Sept. 26, and played the entire first half. In a 4-1 win over Cameroon on Sept. 29, he came on in the 73rd minute and completed the game for the United States. Maund, a sophomore central defender, did not see match time during the tournament. The duo will rejoin their Irish teammates for either the Marquette match on Oct. 7 or the Providence tilt on Oct. 10.
