MADISON, Wisc. – The sixth-ranked Irish women’s tennis team handed Wisconsin its first loss of the season Sunday with a 7-0 sweep of the Badgers. Notre Dame improved to 2-0 with the win.
Notre Dame took an early 1-0 lead after winning two of three doubles matches. Cosmina Ciobanu and Chrissie McGaffigan downed Angela Chupa and Aleksandra Markovic, 8-2, before 12th-ranked Kristy Frilling and Kali Krisik defeated Hannah Berner and Kathleen Saltarelli, 8-4, to clinch the doubles point. Shannon Mathews and Colleen Rielley fell to Alaina Trgovich and Jessica Seyferth, 8-6, at No. 3 doubles.
No. 30 Frilling topped Katya Mirnova 6-4, 6-1, at No. 1 doubles to put the Irish up 2-0. Krisik defeated Saltarelli 6-2, 6-4, at fourth singles, while Mathews downed Berner 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 singles to clinch the win for the Irish.
McGaffigan edged Markovic 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 at No. 3 singles, Ciobanu knocked off Trgovich 6-3, 6-7, 7-1 at fifth singles and Rielley downed Seyferth 7-6, 6-7, 1-0 at No. 6 to complete the sweep for Notre Dame.
The Irish return to the Eck Tennis Pavilion Jan. 30-31 to host DePaul, North Carolina and Boise State in the ITA Kickoff Weekend.
