Rydberg Cements Status As Nation’s Top Freshman In 10,000m At NCAAs

EUGENE, Ore. – Notre Dame freshman Jessica Rydberg logged the fourth-fastest time in school history in the 10,000m run at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships to secure a top-10 finish in the event Wednesday at Hayward Field. Rydberg went 33:34.60 in the race and was the only freshman among the 24-person field.

The performance earned the first-year runner her first outdoor All-America accolade.

Rydberg and the Irish continue the four-day event Thursday. Live video and stats will be available at UND.com.

Women’s 10,000m Run: Rydberg was 10th in 33:34.60, just over one second behind the second-place Andrea Walkonen (33:33.18) of Boston University.

Women’s Discus Throw: Jaclyn Espinoza was 18th after a toss of 45.97m (150-10).

Men’s Triple Jump: The fifth-best outdoor performance in school history went to Eric Quick, who finished 16th … Quick covered a distance of 15.40m (50-06.25).

Women’s Heptathlon: Maddie Buttinger tallied 3,051 points for 20th overall.
