Tonight was the 36th meeting all-time between Notre Dame and St. John’s. The Irish lead the series 20-16. Notre Dame has taken six of the past 11 meetings.
Notre Dame has collected 14 wins in its first 16 games for the first time since the 2006-07 campaign when that Irish squad opened with a 15-2 mark. Tim Abromaitis (12 points) has scored in double-figures in 11 straight regular-season BIG EAST games. He has registered double-figures in 20 out of 22 BIG EAST regular-season games over the past two seasons.
Tim Abromaitis has reached double-figures in points 14 times this season, including in each of the past seven games, and 42 times in his career.
Scott Martin (12 points) reached double-figures for the fifth straight game and for the eighth time this season. The double-digit scoring streak matches a career-best mark. Eric Atkins matched a career-high total with two made three-pointers.
Seniors Tyrone Nash (F), Tim Abromaitis (F), Ben Hansbrough (G) and Scott Martin (G) along with freshman Eric Atkins (G) started tonight’s contest. It marked the second straight game – and second time this season – that quintet has started. Senior forward Carleton Scott, a starter in the first 14 games this season, has missed the past two contests after suffering a hamstring injury last Saturday versus Syracuse. This was Atkins’ third start of the season. Nash, Abromaitis and Hansbrough have started all 16 games this season, while Martin has 15 starts.
Senior forward Tyrone Nash extended his consecutive games played streak to a team-best 66 contests. Nash and senior guard Ben Hansbrough both have started 51 straight contests, which is a team-high total.
Eric Atkins’ three-pointer just over a minute into the contest extended Notre Dame’s streak to 390 straight games with a made three-pointer. The Fighting Irish have made at least one three pointer during every game of the Mike Brey era.
Notre Dame possessed a 44-25 lead at halftime. The Irish are 13-0 this season when leading at the intermission.
