More than 100 Monogram winners and their guests braved the blizzard that swept over the Michiana region to attend the Club’s Alumni Sports Weekend Reception on Jan. 8 at the Schivarelli Football Players’ Lounge.
The function in Notre Dame Stadium included light refreshments and provided a way for returning athletic alumni to gather and socialize in between the day’s two exciting basketball games.
Members enjoyed the opportunity to tour the football locker room and make the journey past the “Play Like A Champion Today” sign onto the field. After the tours concluded, reception attendees made the snowy trek back to the Joyce Center to watch the men’s basketball team defeat St. John’s, 76-61, in Purcell Pavilion.
“Our annual winter alumni reception is a great way for the Monogram Club to start off the New Year,” executive director Beth Hunter said. “The excellent turnout shows that our membership is ready for an exciting year of Notre Dame athletics in 2011. We look forward to hosting more receptions throughout the country in the near future.”
The Monogram Club also held its winter board meeting on Jan. 7, and members enjoyed the reception and other events throughout the weekend.
Monogram advisor Kevin O’Connor ’89 (lacrosse) stressed the importance of having board meetings on campus to meet directly with athletics department staff and work together to accomplish the goals of the Club.
“The main benefit of these meetings is the opportunity to get everyone together in one room,” O’Connor said. “A lot of things we accomplish throughout the year are achieved through conference calls and e-mails. But nothing replaces face-to-face, and we can’t be a successful board if we don’t get together periodically.”
As chair of the Club’s student welfare & development committee, O’Connor added that the main focus of his group in the coming year will be to further improve the mentoring program and other professional-oriented assistance for Notre Dame athletes.
