HOUSTON, Texas – Competing in its first meet of the outdoor track and field season, Notre Dame turned in a strong effort, winning four events on day one of the 30th annual Victor Lopez Invitational on the campus of Rice University in Houston, Texas.
Claiming victories on Friday night were Andrew Hills (Hammer Throw), Vivien Devaney (Hammer Throw), Kelly Curran (1,500m) and Jordan Carlson (3,000m SC).
Hills won the hammer throw with a toss of 54.62m (179-02 ft), surpassing the second place competitor by .22 meters. Teammate Mitchell Gormley finished fourth with a throw of 51.49m (168-11 ft).
In the women’s throw, the Irish went one-two as Devaney won the event with a toss of 52.82m (173-03 ft), surpassing teammate Madeline Casanova (52.33m, 171-08 ft) by .49 meters).
In the women’s 1,500m run, Notre Dame claimed five of the top eight spots. Curran led the way, finishing first in 4:26.80. Teammate Alexa Aragon followed closely behind in second (4:27.01). McKinzie Schulz placed fifth with a time of 4:33.46. Following closely behind was Angela Ryck (6th, 4:33.72) and Allison Schroeder (8th, 4:36.38).
The Irish continued their strong night as Carlson won the 3,000m steeplechase in a time of 9:00.57. Two other Notre Dame runners finished in the top four as Kelly Lynch took third (9:13.58) and Joe Miller finished fourth (9:14.16).
In the men’s 5,000m run Jeff MacMillan finished sixth in 14:50.23, while in the women’s Meg Ryan placed third in 17:17.88.
