ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team dropped a competitive 6-1 decision Tuesday to No. 12 Georgia in non-conference action at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.

The Bulldogs (10-1) clinched the doubles point after sweeping the action on all three courts. The No. 3 ranked squad of Kate Fuller and Silvia Garcia downed the No. 60 duo of Jennifer Kellner and Chrissie McGaffigan 8-5 at first doubles. Georgia’s Lauren Herring and Maho Kowase defeated No. 36 Julie Sabacinski and Britney Sanders 8-4 at the second doubles court to give the Bulldogs an early 1-0 team lead.

Fuller extended the Georgia advantage to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 straight set victory over Notre Dame’s (9-5) McGaffigan at fourth singles. Makenzie Craft posted a 6-0, 6-2 win over Molly O’Koniewski at the No. 5 court to up the Bulldog lead to 3-0.

Quinn Gleason battled back from a 6-4 first frame setback against Kowase at third singles, tying the second set 4-4 to keep herself in the match. Kowase ultimately took the final two points to secure the team match for Georgia with a 6-4, 6-4 victory.

Katherine White picked up the first Notre Dame point of the day at the No. 6 court, taking a three-set decision over Lilly Kimbell 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6). White opened the third set super set with a 7-2 lead, and did not relinquish the advantage.

Sanders, the No. 49 player in the country, squared her match with No. 7 Herring with a 7-5 second set after being shut out in the first frame 6-0. Herring prevailed in the third set to take the match 6-0, 5-7, 1-0 (10-3).

Garcia capped the day’s singles matches with a 6-3, 6-2 straight set win over Kellner at the No. 2 court.

Notre Dame travels to UAB Thursday at 2 p.m. for the second stop of its three-match road trip.
