WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team extended its winning streak over Wake Forest to eight matches Friday, dominating the Demon Deacons in a 7-0 win at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.

The No. 40 Fighting Irish (13-6, 7-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) have won five of their last six matches and improved to 5-2 in road matches this season.

The Irish secured the doubles point as 20th-ranked Quinn Gleason and Monica Robinson easily dispatched Xue Zhang and Andrea Retolaza 8-3 on Court 1. Wake Forest (12-10, 2-8 ACC) evened things on Court 2 as Kimmy Guerin and Kasey Gardiner defeated Julie Vrabel and Mary Closs 8-2, but Allison Miller and Jane Fennelly evened things up with an 8-3 victory over Luisa Fernandez and Samantha Asch on Court 3.

Robinson gave Notre Dame the first singles point, quickly downing Zhang 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 2 slot, improving her own singles winning streak to five. Closs followed that with a straight-set victory over her own, a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Fernandez to give the Irish a 3-0 lead. Miller clinched things for Notre Dame, cruising in the second set to notch a 7-6, 6-1 win over Gardiner.

Each of the remaining three matches went into extra sessions. On Court 1, Gleason came back after dropping the first set to defeat Guerin, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. Fennelly won similarly, defeating Courtney Meredith 4-6, 7-6, 1-0(10-7) at No. 6 singles. Vrabel completed the sweep on Court 3, hanging on to upend Asch 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.

The Irish return to action at noon EDT Sunday when they take on No. 32 Virginia Tech (12-5, 4-4 ACC) at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Virginia. For the latest on all Irish women’s tennis action, follow@NDWomensTennis on Twitter and like Notre Dame Women’s Tennis on Facebook.
