TEMPE, Ariz. – The Notre Dame track and field team kicked off the 39th annual Sun Angel Track Classic with field events Friday evening. With athletes in both the men’s and women’s hammer throw, sophomore Abbey Kapitan highlighted the first day of action with her personal-best mark.
In the first event of the night, Kapitan and freshman Rachel Tanczos took part in the women’s open hammer throw. Kapitan finished sixth overall with a personal-best 48.84m (160-03). She beat her previous mark, which she set earlier this season at the Hurricane Invitational. Tanczos finished right behind her in seventh with a 47.83m (156-11).
On the men’s side, Logan Kusky and Shae Watkins represented the Irish in two different hammer events. Kusky was in the hammer throw premiere where he finished ninth with a 58.04m (190-05). Watkins competed in the open hammer throw and finished 10th with his best mark of 51.43m (168-09).

The rest of the Irish track and field team will be in action tomorrow afternoon for the second and final day of the Sun Angel Track Classic. The women’s open discus will be the first event tomorrow starting at 1 pm ET. Fans can follow along via the live results here.
