EVANSTON, Ill. — The University of Notre Dame women’s fencing team was nearly untouchable Saturday as the top-ranked Fighting Irish took to the strip Saturday at the Northwestern Duals at Ryan Fieldhouse.

The women were perfect in eight matches, while the men took three of their seven contests in the teams’ final collegiate warm-ups before the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships, slated for Feb. 23-24 in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

The Irish women completed the day unblemished, winning all eight matches, including five against top 10 teams. After starting the day with a 19-8 victory over UC San Diego, the Notre Dame women (31-2 record) defeated No. 8 Princeton (by a score of 19-8), No. 9 Penn (18-9), No. 2 Northwestern (15-12), Air Force (15-12), No. 8 Duke (18-9), No. 10 Temple (17-10) and Incarnate Word (23-4).

The men’s team went 3-4 on the day to move to 27-5 on the season. The Irish defeated UC San Diego (15-12), Air Force (18-9), and Incarnate Word (17-10), but fell to No. 9 Penn (15-12), Stanford (15-12), No. 10 Duke (14-13) and No. 5 Princeton (17-10).

Up Next

The Irish will return to NCAA competition Feb. 23-24 at the ACC Championships, hosted by Boston College. The Irish men and women have each won three of the past four conference titles, since the sport was reintroduced to the ACC in 2015. In the meantime, select Irish fencers will compete individually at the U.S. Fencing Junior Olympics, Feb. 15-18 in Denver.
