CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The Irish opened their run at the 2019 ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships with two podiums, six All-ACC honorees and a school record performance in the women’s javelin.
Anna Rohrer highlighted the first day of competition, making her outdoor debut in the women’s 10K run. Racing towards the front of the pack but unable to overtake the lead through the first 5K, she burst into the lead as she entered the back half of the race to run away with her second ACC Outdoor Championship title in the event. She also set the Lannigan Field record in the process, crossing the line in 33:30.73. Her teammate, freshman Maddy Denner took silver in the race with a time of 34:00.45 to earn All-ACC First Team honors as well.
In the field, two Irish women earned All-ACC Second Team honors as Gabrielle Diederich finished fifth in the javelin with a perosnal best and Notre Dame record mark of 47.39m. Earlier in the day, Rachel Tanczos came just shy of her hammer throw record to take sixth overall in 64.21m.
The final two top-six finishes for conference honors came in the men’s 10K as Bradley Wattleworth (29:55.70) and Peter Monahan (29:57.35) finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Their teammate Tyler Keslin took seventh in the event in 30:02.49.
Four Irish runners will race again as Grace Cronin (400m hurdles), Dylan Jacobs (1500m), Yared Nuguse (1500m) and Andrew Delvecchio (1500m) all qualified for Saturday’s finals following their finishes tonight.
Cronin crossed the finish line in the hurdles with a personal best time of 1:00.49 to earn the final spot in the later finals while Yared Nuguse and Andrew Delvecchio finished first and fifth overall in the men’s 1500m run with Delvecchio clocking a personal best time. Dylan Jacobs earned an automatic qualifying spot with his third-place finish in the second heat to bring the overall tally to three in the 1500m finals.
At the end of the first day in Virginia, the Irish women sit in a tie with Virginia Tech for second with 25 points while the men are tied for third, tallying 12 points along with Pitt.
