Irish Announce Captains For 2019-20

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Serving the team as standout swimmers for the Irish, the University of Notre Dame men’s and women’s swim and dive team has named its captains for the 2019-20 season. The women’s side will be represented by Lauren Heller and Erin Sheehan while the men’s squad will be captained by Jack Montesi and Aaron Schultz. Said head coach Mike Litzinger:

Heller represented the team at the NCAA Championships as a member of the 800 free relay team where she completed her leg of the race in 1:46.21. Competing at the ACC Championships, she set a personal best time of 1:45.83 in the 200 free finals on her way to 10th overall. At the championship meet, Heller set career best times in three events, on three consecutive days, including in the 50 free, 100 free and 200 free. Through three years with the team, she owns top-10 times in three events including all of which times were set this season. A native of Stow, Ohio, the junior is working towards a degree in Psychology.

Sheehan hails from Upper Arlington, Ohio and helped her team to an undefeated dual meet season this past year. The rising senior boasts three top-10 times in program history, including a second-best 100 fly time of 52.22 seconds set in 2017. This past year she set a personal best time of 2:00.02 in the 200 IM at the ACC Championships to earn the seventh-best Irish time all-time. She also set a career best time in the 200 back against Michigan State, touching the wall in 2:05.92 before earning another top time in the 100 free her next time out, at the Ohio State Winter Invitational where she clocked in at 50.81 seconds. Outside of the pool, Sheehan is majoring in Business Analytics.

With ties to Riverside, Connecticut, Montesi joined the Irish three years ago and has recorded three program top-10 times throughout his career. Most notably, Montesi set the school record in the 100 back this past year, recording a time of 46.33 seconds at the ACC Championships. He also set personal best times in the 50 free, 50 back and 50 fly this season. At the Ohio State Invitational, Montesi set PR times of 20.75 seconds in the 50 free and completed the 50 back in 21.69 seconds. He later earned a personal best finish at the ACC Championships in the 50 fly, touching the wall in 21.60 seconds of the finals. In the classroom, he studies finance in the Mendoza College of Business.

One of four Irish representatives at the men’s NCAA Championships in March, Schultz competed in the 100 fly, 200 fly and 200 IM. He qualified for a spot in the meet following a personal best 200 fly finish of 1:41.70 at the Boiler-Make-It meet. The Richmond, Virginia native also recorded a career best finish at the ACC Championships, touching the wall in 21.57 seconds. All-time, he owns four Irish program top-10 times, including the 200 fly school record set at the Boiler-Make-It at Purdue in March. A management consulting major, Schultz also boasts top times in the 100 fly, 200 IM and 200 free.
