NOTRE DAME, Ind. — No. 16/12 Notre Dame compiled an impressive finish Saturday to an overall record-breaking weekend in the final session of the Shamrock Invitational. Both the men and the women posted team wins, and, with the pool record set by Jack Hoagland Saturday, the Irish compiled eight record-breaking finishes over two days.

As the Shamrock Invitational is modeled after a championship meet, Notre Dame head coach Mike Litzinger said that it would be a helpful rehearsal for the Irish of refueling and recovery.

“It’s a rigorous weekend, and we got off to a great start with Jack Hoagland setting a pool record,” he attested. “When you see someone come back and be able to do that, especially earlier in the morning, that’s a really good sign for our team.

“We still have a lot to work on, but it on the whole, everybody came to race today.”

SESSION III

Lindsay Stone got Notre Dame off to a quick start, winning the women’s 1650 Free with a 16:34.54. Hoagland answered on the men’s side, posting his third pool record of the weekend, this one in the men’s 1650 Free with a 14:46.08. His time bested the previous pool mark by more than 15 seconds.

Bayley Stewart claimed second in the women’s 200 Back, posting a B-Cut 1:56.25. In the men’s 200 Back, senior Jack Montesi placed second (1:43.94 – B Cut) while senior Sadler McKeen placed fourth (1:45.01 – B Cut).

Senior Abbie Dolan won the women’s 100 Free on senior day, marking down a B-Cut 49.21. Josh Bottelberghe added a win in the 200 Breast (1:56.78 – B Cut), followed by Rex Riley, who claimed second with a 2:00.22.

In the women’s 200 Fly, Notre Dame made a statement, as Coleen Gillilan (1:56.06) and Luciana Thomas (1:56.74) took first and second place with B-Cut times.

Notre Dame women finished strong in the women’s 400 Free Relay, winning the event as Dolan, Gillilan, senior captain Lauren Heller and Rachel Wittmer turned in a 3:18.61. The men followed suit, with Zach Yeadon, Cason Wilburn, Aaron Schultz and McKeen winning the 400 Free Relay with a 2:55.16.

On the diving end, the Irish women completed their sweep of the diving events, as Kelly Straub placed first in the 1-meter (298.55). Erin Isola, who placed first in the 3-meter, came in third at 294.05.

The Irish will stay home for one more week, hosting Ball State, Indiana State and Michigan State on Saturday, Feb. 1.

“It’s nice to finish up at home, because it doesn’t take a whole lot away from our championship prep,” Litzinger noted. “So, we don’t have to go on the road, and you don’t have to travel a lot. We get to stay within the friendly confines of our own bed and residence halls and dining halls. It’s a little bit easier on their bodies as we kind of point towards the championship.”

The meet is set to begin at noon on Saturday. Follow along with @NDSwimDive on Twitter for updates.
