NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Notre Dame men’s golf duo of Davis Chatfield and Palmer Jackson certainly made the most out of their situation. Just a week after their comeback bid at the NCAA Stillwater Regional came up a tad short, an opportunity at the US Amateur Four-Ball event presented itself.
What transpired next was the best run by Irish golfers at the Four-ball event, now in its sixth year. Chatfield and Palmer survived an 11-for-6 playoff on Monday just to get into the match-play draw. Then the Notre Dame duo made some noise.
Later that day they took out the defending champs in 42-year olds Scott Harvey and Todd Mitchell, 2-up. Then on Tuesday, Chatfield and Palmer took out a couple more USGA champions en route to a spot in the semifinals.
First, they defeated 2015 champions Nathan Smith and Todd White, 3 and 2. Then just a couple of hours later, the Irish duo topped Preston Summerhays and Luke Potter, needing 21 holes to do so.
All-in-all, of the eight USGA champions in the draw, Chatfield and Jackson had eliminated five.
The Chatfield/Jackson tandem bowed out in the semis, where they lost 3 and 2 to Kiko Francisco Coelho and Leopoldo Herrera III, who later went on to claim the championship trophy.
