ATLANTA, Ga. — The University of Notre Dame men’s swimming and diving team picked up its first All-American honor of the championships Friday night at the McAuley Aquatic Center. Senior Josh Bottelberghe placed 12th overall in the 100 breaststroke finals to earn Honorable Mention All-American status. He finished with a time of 51.61 that tied his school record that he set earlier in the season.
Bottelberghe qualified for the consolation final after placing 15th in the prelims with a time of 51.74. Teammate Tyler Christianson finished 39th with a time of 54.37, which was the seventh-fastest time in Notre Dame program history for the 100 breaststroke. Freshman Chris Guiliano also swam a top time in the 200 freestyle prelims. He finished 38th with a time of 1:34.03, the fifth-fastest time in program history.
The 400 medley relay team were in action during the evening portion of the day for their second swim of the championships. The squad of Kaden Smesko, Bottelberghe, Cason Wilburn and Guiliano set their second school record of the championships. They finished 21st overall with a school record time of 3:05.93. The same group set the school record in the 200 medley relay on Wednesday night.
For the final day of competition, the trio of Guiliano, Bottelberghe and Christianson will be back in the pool for their final individual swims. Guiliano will take part in the 100 freestyle prelims while Bottelberghe and Christianson will be in the 200 breaststroke prelims. In the evening session, the 400 freestyle relay team will conclude the championships for the Irish.
