SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Following a successful week in the draw circle, junior midfielder for the University of Notre Dame women’s lacrosse team, Kelly Denes was named defensive player of the week by the ACC.
Denes led the second-ranked draw control team to a 24-4 advantage against the Louisville Cardinals as the Irish won their final game of the regular season, 15-9, and dominating possession. With her team-leading 10 draw controls of the day, Denes set a new career-best single season mark of 103 draws in 16 games played.
Her career setting day was also highlighted by her 200th career draw control, eclipsing the momentous tally with in the second quarter against the Cardinals.
The Jupiter, Florida native also caused two turnovers in the win while adding three ground balls to her career day.
On the offensive side of the ball, Denes scored once to lift the Irish to victory, forcing a turnover in the neutral zone before picking up the ground ball and rushing in on the breakaway to extend the ND lead.
The weekly award marks the first for Denes and sixth of the season for the Irish.
The Notre Dame women return to action Wednesday afternoon in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals. They are set to play Virginia at 1:30 p.m. in Charlotte, North Carolina.
