Summer Internships: Izzy Pithie

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – This summer our student-athletes were hard at work off the field gaining life experiences in their desired fields. Here’s Izzy Pithie’s story:

Where did you spend your summer?
I spent my summer here in South Bend with Summa Health.
What was your position at the company?
I interned with them shadowing under the legal branch.
What were some of the biggest things you learned from your internship?
I learned about how the law stretches into every part of our daily life, in ways we don’t even know about. I understood how important it is that laws are both solid, but also that those working are ready for ways in which the healthcare system changes and how the legal system can work to change with that.
How did you find this internship?
My advisor sent Mr. Rob Gerberry an email about me and then he offered me an internship in their office.
What were some challenges you faced at your internship?
One thing was understanding some verbiage of the healthcare system was difficult. Coming from a background of political science and psychology I was less accustomed to some of the information they were talking about, but they offered numerous opportunities to ask questions so that I was able to know exactly what was going on.
Biggest takeaway from the internship you can relate to in lacrosse?
One of my biggest takeaways was building connections with the people around you makes whatever team your on whether it is athletically or in business makes your experience so much more enjoyable and more successful.
Do you plan to work for said company following graduation?
Although I am not particularly interested in focusing in on healthcare within the legal system, but I would be honored if I was offered the opportunity to work there upon graduation.
