GREENSBORO, N.C. — Notre Dame swimming and diving head to Greensboro this week for the 2024 ACC Championships. The meet begins Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Greensboro Aquatic Center and will run through Saturday evening.
Men’s Preview
The 11th-ranked Irish men are eyeing one of the best finishes since joining the ACC. U.S. Senior National Team member Chris Guiliano is the headliner for the group, but there are several who could sneak into A finals.
Guiliano is the top seed in both the 100 and 200 freestyle, and he is second in the 50. He is the reigning 200 freestyle ACC champion. His 100 time of 41.23 is the NCAA A cut, so he will be heading to Indy in that event next month.
Notre Dame has had immense success in the backstroke events recently, and several Irish have legitimate chances to make NCAAs. The sophomore duo of Tommy Janton and Marcus Gentry are seeds No. 4 and No. 5, respectively, in the 100 backstroke (45.66/45.77). Tanner Filion, Lucas Logue and Kaden Smesko are all seeded in the top 20. Janton and Gentry again appear as the third and fourth seeds in the 200 backstroke.
In the diving well, sophomore Daniel Knapp finished fourth in the 1-meter as a rookie last year, just off the podium. He missed a couple of meets with an injury this season, but he has come back strong and will look to earn a top spot. He is entered the meet with the third-best 1-meter score. Ben Nguyen is seeded fourth in the platform event and was a 2023 finalist.
Women’s Preview
Junior Madelyn Christman has posted best times in the 200 backstroke in back-to-back meets, and she is seeded third in the event this week (1:53.27). Christman also checks in at No. 15 in the 100 backstroke (52.78).
Fellow junior Maggie Graves has been impressive in the distance events and will look to secure her NCAA spot in the 1650 freestyle. Her time of 16:11.39 would’ve made the field last season.
Ellie Jew is one to watch in the breaststroke events. The 2023 NCAA qualifier returned for a fifth year with high aspirations. She is seeded 16th in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:00.76, but she has broken the 1-minute mark before. Jew is also 13th in the 200 breaststroke (2:11.79).
Finally, two-time NCAA qualifier and diver Calie Brady is seeded fifth in the 1-meter (314.55) and fourth in the 3-meter (347.95). Sophomore Grace Courtney could sneak onto the podium in the platform, as she is entered at sixth with a 263.25 and was a finalist in the event last season.
