LINCOLN, Neb. – The No. 8 Notre Dame Fighting Irish (0-0-3) finished with a 1-1 draw in their first road match of the season against the Nebraska Cornhuskers (1-0-2) on Thursday evening.
Ellie Hodsden scored her first goal of the season for the equalizer in Thursday night’s match. Senior goalkeeper Jackie Hollomon made her first career start as she tied her career-high with three saves on the night.
It was a slow start in Lincoln with a scoreless first 30 minutes of play. While the Irish had two shots on goal in search of the first goal of the evening, the Cornhuskers would ultimately take the 1-0 lead to start as they found the back of the net in the 33rd minute on the rebound of a Hollomon save.
The Irish however started to get some more looks in response to the Cornhusker goal as Notre Dame would be on offense for a majority of the remaining half. Hodsden remained aggressive as she battled for an opportunity on a header that resulted in another Nebraska save. The Irish finished the first half with six shots and three shots on goal.
Notre Dame had three shots in the first 25 minutes of the second half and while they still hadn’t found the back of the net yet, the Irish were persistent in their efforts.
And eventually, their relentless efforts paid off. In the 72nd minute, freshman Bristol Kersh fired a shot from the left side of the box. While the Nebraska goalkeeper made the save, the ball then immediately fell at the feet of Hodsden where she scored on the right side to tie it up at 1-all.
In search of a game-winning goal, Hodsden had another great look in the 88th minute. Charlie Codd sent the pass through a pair of defenders up ahead to Hodsden, but the shot on goal would fall right into the hands of the Cornhuskers goalie to keep it at a final 1-1 on the night.
