Notre Dame, Ind. – Nick Richey has been named assistant athletic trainer at the University of Notre Dame. Prior to joining the Irish athletic training staff, he served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Virginia Tech.

Richey was a member of the Hokies’ training staff for 17 months while taking graduate classes in health and physical education. He assisted with football during the 2003 and ’04 campaigns and served as the primary athletic trainer for the softball team. In addition, he also assisted in various athletic training duties at Blacksburg High School and served as the liaison for the USAOlympic Softball Team during its visit to the Blacksburg area in June of ’04. Richey earned his graduate degree from Virginia Tech in December of’04.

A 2003 graduate of Purdue with a bachelor’s degree in athletic training, Richey was a student assistant athletic trainer while attending school. He assisted with the men’s basketball program during the 2002-03 school year and with the football and cheerleading teams in 2001-02. Richey also assisted the New Orleans Saints medical staff during summer training camps in both ’01 and ’02.

At Notre Dame, he will work with the women’s lacrosse and men’s soccer programs. Richey is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association and is certified by the NATABOC.

Richey and his wife Abby reside in South Bend.
