EVANSTON, Ill. – The 11th-ranked Notre Dame men’s tennis squad earned its second consecutive win in back-to-back competitions as the Irish easily defeated the Northwestern Wildcats, 7-0, in Evanston, Ill. Just a day ago Notre Dame took down Michigan State at home. With the two victories, the Irish now sit with a 4-1 record in dual-match competition.
Starting out the competition, the Irish took control winning all three of the doubles matches. Brett Helgeson and Sheeva Parbhu earned the first win for the Irish, taking the victory 8-5. The duo of Stephen Havens and Andrew Roth secured the doubles point for Notre Dame, earning a win with a score of 8-3. Tyler Davis and Santiago Montoya followed up the first two performances with the final doubles win, prevailing 8-5.
On the singles side of the match, 11th ranked Helgeson took the first victory for Notre Dame in the No. 1 spot. Helgeson defeated Marc Dwyer of Northwestern, 6-3, 6-2 for the easy win. Helgeson’s record now sits with an outstanding overall record of 16-1 in singles play.
Parbhu, Roth, Havens, David Anderson and Daniel Stahl each brought in wins for Notre Dame to take the 7-0 team sweep. Anderson’s win over Juan Gomex for Northwestern, 7-5, 6-4, secured the Irish team victory.
Notre Dame returns to action on Sunday, Feb. 3 as they travel to Durham, N.C., to take on the Duke Blue Devils at noon (ET).
