NOTRE DAME, Ind. —The University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team faced a top 20 matchup with Stanford on Friday night, but encountered its second lost of the season in a 6-1 decision at the Eck Tennis Pavilion.
The 19th-ranked Irish fell to the eighth-ranked Cardinal in the doubles portion of the night with the only doubles win for the Irish on Court 3 by Mary Closs and Jane Fennelly, who defeated Krista Hardebeck and Lindsey Kostas, 6-3. It was No. 12 Caroline Doyle and Ellen Tsay on Court 2 who clinched the doubles point for Stanford with a 7-6 (4) win to defeat Notre Dame’s Julie Vrabel and Allie Miller. Sixth-ranked doubles pair Taylor Davidson and Carol Zhao also had a win for the Cardinal on Court 1 to defeat No. 16 Quinn Gleason and Monica Robinson, 6-4.
The only Irish singles win came from Closs, who defeated Hardebeck in the No. 4 slot, 6-2, 7-5. Stanford took wins on Court 5, Court 1 and Court 3 to seal the victory over the Irish. At the No. 5 slot, Tsay defeated Miller, 6-4, 6-1. After losing the first set, fourth-ranked Zhao came back to defeat Gleason, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1. No. 13 Doyle sealed the win for the Cardinal on Court 3 defeating Vrabel in three sets, as well, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
After sealing the victory with three singles wins, Stanford also saw a win on Court 2 as No. 12 Davidson defeated Robinson, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. The final match concluded on Court 6 with a 7-5, 7-5 win by Kostas to Jane Fennelly.
