No. 41 Irish Win Two In Return To Eck

The No. 41 Notre Dame men’s tennis team celebrated a return to Eck Tennis Pavilion for the first time in a month on Saturday with a pair of victories over Ball State, 6-1, and St. Bonaventure, 7-0.

With the two wins, the Irish improve to 10-2 at home, with both losses coming to top-10 foes Kentucky (4-3) and Ohio State (5-2).

Leading the way for the Irish was No. 52 Greg Andrews, who won a pair of singles matches and both doubles contests, and senior co-captain Niall Fitzgerald, who won two singles matches and a doubles contest.

The Irish (14-7) return to BIG EAST action on Wednesday when they welcome conference foe DePaul for a 4 p.m. match. The match will be available via live stats, with a link available on UND.com.

No. 41 Notre Dame 6, Ball State 1

The Irish had little trouble with Ball State winning all three doubles matches and five of six singles contests to take down the Cardinals, 6-1.

In doubles, Spencer Talmadge and Greg Andrews won 8-4 at two, while Sam Keeton and Billy Pecor won 8-3 at number three. Niall Fitzgerald and Casey Watt got all they could handle at one from Dalton Albertin and Ray Leonard, but prevailed, 9-8 (7-4), to give the Irish the sweep.

Notre Dame breezed through the singles portion of the match as the five Irish victories were in straight sets with only one opponent winning four games in a set. Fitzgerald got the Irish started at five singles, defeating Austin Smith, 6-2, 6-0. Junior Blas Moros gave Notre Dame a 3-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Patrick Elliot. No. 52 Andrews clinched the match as he knocked off Ray Leonard, 6-3, 6-2, at two singles. Keeton defeated Zane Smith, 6-1, 6-4, at three and the final victory for Notre Dame came from Pecor at four singles, as he knocked off Alexandre Brym, 6-3, 6-2.

The lone loss came at one singles as Albertin slipped past Watt, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5).

The win was the first for Notre Dame since a 5-2 victory over then-No. 58 Maryland on March 4.

Notre Dame swept through St. Bonaventure in the nightcap, winning the contest, 7-0.

All three doubles teams earned victory to give the Irish the early 1-0 lead. At No. 1 doubles, Andrews and Talmadge won 8-4, as did Dougie Barnard and Michael Fredericka at No. 3 doubles. At two doubles, Michael Moore and Wyatt McCoy cruised to an 8-1 victory.

In singles action, all six Irish student-athletes won in straight sets. Andrews picked up his second win of the day with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Oscar Yanez. Fitzgerald moved up to two singles and handled Luis Guevara, 6-1, 6-1. McCoy defeated Elliot Fanshel by a similar 6-1, 6-1 score, while Moore almost blanked Miguel Suarez, 6-1, 6-0. Ryan Bandy rolled past Javier Ortiz, 6-1, 6-1, and Matt Dooley won at No. 6 singles, 7-5, 6-2, over Trevor Haskell.
