NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The fifth-ranked Irish women’s tennis team extended their season record to 10-1 with a 5-2 victory over No. 13 North Carolina Friday at the Eck Tennis Pavilion.
The Irish jumped out to a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point. No. 3 Kelcy Tefft and Kristy Frilling defeated No. 4 Sanaz Marand and Sophie Grabinski, 8-3, at No. 1 doubles, before Cosmina Ciobanu and Kali Krisik knocked off Katrina Tsang and Austin Smith, 8-4, at No. 2 doubles to clinch the point for the Irish. Shannon Mathews and Colleen Rielley downed Laura Reichert and Meg Fanjoy, 8-5, at No.3 doubles to complete the sweep.
No. 59 Tefft pushed the Irish lead to 2-0, after knocking off No. 29 Marand, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 1 singles. Ciobanu downed Jelena Durisic, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 5 singles, while Kristen Rafael knocked off Austin Smith, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 3 singles to clinch the win for the Irish.
Mathews defeated Reichert, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 6 singles. Krisik dropped her No. 5 singles match 7-5, 3-6, 7-8, to Grabinski, and No. 82 Frilling fell to Tsang, 6-3, 6-7, 5-10.
The Irish will host No. 23 Wake Forest Sunday at noon at the Eck Tennis Pavilion.
